A judge determines who will be the lead plaintiff. Among Michigan’s claims is that it had the most victims — roughly 574,000 — who lost money in pension funds.

“Our decision to pursue lead-plaintiff status sends a clear message that we will take every step necessary to recover lost funds and ensure our investments do not fall victim to fraudulent activity,” state Treasurer Robert Kleine said in a statement.

Together, Kleine and Attorney General Mike Cox said if the case goes to trial, they will lead all strategy decisions. They will fight on behalf of AIG stock and bondholders and negotiate settlement terms.
